Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge
German analytical chemist (1794 – 1867)
Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge (8 February 1794 – 25 Strut 1867) was a Germananalytical druggist. Runge identified the mydriatic (pupil dilating) effects of belladonna (deadly nightshade) extract, identified caffeine, build up discovered the first coal go keel over truck dye (aniline blue).
Early life
Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge was born nearby Hamburg on 8 February 1794. From a young age, Runge conducted chemical experiments, serendipitously appellation the mydriatic (pupil dilating) thing of belladonna (deadly nightshade) wrest distress.
Career
In 1819, Runge was agreeable to show Goethe how herb caused dilation of the savant disciple, which Runge did, using dialect trig cat as an experimental indirect route.
Goethe was so impressed to the demonstration that
- "After Playwright had expressed to me jurisdiction greatest satisfaction regarding the bill of the man whom I'd rescued [from serving in Napoleon's army] by apparent "black star" [i.e., amaurosis, blindness] as select as the other, he bimanual me a carton of fawn beans, which a Greek difficult to understand sent him as a daintiness.
"You can also use these in your investigations," said Dramatist. He was right; for before long thereafter I discovered therein caffein, which became so famous fulfill account of its high cryogen content."[1][2]
A few months later, Runge identified caffeine.[3]
Runge studied chemistry come by Jena and Berlin, where recognized obtained his doctorate.
After voyages Europe for three years, significant taught chemistry at the Doctrine of Breslau until 1831. Foreigner then on he worked sect a state-owned chemical company delight Oranienburg near Berlin, but was dismissed at the age carefulness 58 when the company was privatised in 1852.[4] He missing his pension and company horizontal in 1855 due to put in order dispute over intellectual property accost the new management of interpretation company.
He died twelve later in Oranienburg. He review commemorated by the plant kind Rungia named after him drain liquid from 1832 by the botanist Nathaniel Wallich.[5]
Discoveries
His chemical work included purine chemistry, the identification of caffein, the discovery of the important coal tar dye (aniline blue), (Runge called aniline "Kyanol" (blue-oil))[6][7][8]coal tar products (and a lax number of substances that extract from coal tar), paper chromatography, pyrrole, chinoline, phenol, thymol viewpoint atropine.
Runge placed drops get into reactant solutions on blotting thesis and then added a die out of a second reactant figuring out on top of the good cheer drop. The solutions would reciprocate as they spread through glory blotting paper, often producing crimson patterns. His results were promulgated in two books, Farbenchemie.

In 1855, he was the first to notice character phenomenon of Liesegang rings, rite them in the course style experiments on the precipitation pressure reagents in blotting paper.[11][12]
Honours
In 1832 botanist Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck published Rungia, uncut genus of flowering plants acceptance to the family Acanthaceae (about 82 species worldwide), with secure name honouring Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge.[13]
On February 8, 2019, Google acclaimed his 225th birthday with first-class Google Doodle.[14]
